Project Home Sweet Home delivers new and gently used home furnishings to families in need in Marin County.
Contrary to its image as a bastion of wealth, Marin County is home to an estimated 16,000 people living in poverty. At 6.25% of the county’s total population, Marin’s poverty population is growing faster than the rest.
Project Home Sweet Home focuses on recently homeless families that have just regained housing. We identify these families by referral from organizations that provide primary assistance (usually with housing, food, clothing, and social services) to low-income and/or at-risk families. By meeting and collaborating with the caseworkers of these local agencies, we identify clients in need of our services. While there are many support services in place in Marin, no other agency focuses on providing furniture.
Once we have identified a family in need, we make a visit to their home to determine the specific items needed as well as any spacial restrictions or problems that need to be resolved. We then select the furnishings needed from the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Rohnert Park and have them delivered to the family.
As a priority, Project Home Sweet Home clients typically receive a new bed and bedding for each family member. In addition, we are often able to provide the other furnishings and household items that help turn a house into a home.
